Back-to-School 2017

Yesterday was the 3rd annual Return event sponsored by Keep Watch Prayer. The Return event takes place to celebrate the incredible movement of God through prayer walks and church/school partnerships taking place all over the Toledo area. At the close of the 2016/2017 school year there were prayer walks taking place in 37 area schools and church/school partnerships in 30 Toledo Public Schools. At yesterday’s event we heard many stories of impact in the lives of students and staff, as well as how God has moved in the  lives of His people who have served in the schools.

I had the privilege of attending this event with Keyser’s principal, Natasha Allen. I was so pleased to pray for her specifically and to join with her in prayer for the students at Keyser.

I was reminded of Doug’s mention in his message yesterday of the turbulent times we live in. There is much fear and anger in the world. We may not be able to do much to change the world and the culture, but we were reminded yesterday that prayer changes things. Brynedale School teacher, Christine Sweeney, shared about how lives are changing in her school since prayer walks began there three years ago. One thing she said that struck me was, “God wants to start change right where we are”. We have the opportunity to serve people in our community – in our jobs, our schools, our neighborhoods – and at Keyser, our partner school. Change starts in small ways. When we serve others. When we pray for people. When people become real to us as we build relationships with them. Walls come down when we move from talking about or praying for anonymous people, to praying for specific faces and names of those we are getting to know through serving them with God’s love. We may not be able to change the world, but we can begin to start change in our locality – in our neighborhoods, in our schools, in our jobs.

Tomorrow, Tuesday August 22, we begin our prayer walks at Keyser School. We pray through the halls. We pray at each classroom. We pray for teachers and staff and students. Will you join us?

We pray every Tuesday morning during the school year from 7:45-8:15 and then culminate around the flag pole for prayer with any staff members who choose to join us. If you are going to join us, please let me know to make sure we get you into the school. mbrack@gracetoledo,org.

Other opportunities for serving at Keyser in the near future include:

Goodies With Grandparents, a parent appreciation event held on Monday, September 11 from 2:00-3:00PM.

Reading tutoring will begin toward the end of September. Requires a commitment of one hour per week during the school day, 9:00-3:00PM.

Kid’s Club, after school Bible club, begins October 5. Meets for 10 weeks on Thursdays from 3:15-4:30 in the school library. There are many ways to participate and your children are welcome to come with you.

We are also looking for someone to coordinate the Thanksgiving Food Drive which runs through October and November done in partnership with Epiphany Lutheran Church.
