Andy kicked off our Advent series, Christmas Characters, with a study of the ancient Jewish king, Herod the Great. Herod was known for his great building accomplishments, his military victories, his political cunning, and his ruthless use of violence to protect his throne. He also enters the biblical account of Christ’s birth in Matthew 2, when he orders the slaughter of the toddler boys of Bethlehem in an evil attempt to kill the Messiah.
